Buying a Helmet

A helmet is the most crucial piece of equipment you'll purchase. It protects the rider's most vital part—their brain. It's essential that the helmet fits properly, and it should be fitted by a professional. The fit should be snug but not uncomfortable. The helmet's style is a personal choice; the rider might prefer a sized helmet or one with an adjustable dial at the back. Both options are suitable and are rated for equestrian falls. Helmets for beginners are generally less expensive, while those designed for specialized riding with additional features are more costly. All helmets adhere to the same safety standard.
When you're ready to buy a helmet, plan to try on various types and brands to ensure a proper fit. Each brand fits differently; some are more round, while others are oval. It's important to have the patience to find a helmet that matches your child's head shape, ensuring safety and comfort, so it doesn't distract from the riding experience.
A helmet should be replaced after a significant fall or after five years of use, whichever comes first. Helmets do have an expiration date. Regular use, along with exposure to temperature changes and sunlight, degrades the plastic and weakens the helmet's components over time. Below is a video of my daughter getting her new helmet.
